Generative AI and Assessment in the Classroom: A Workshop on Foundational Concepts and Practices

 

  • This workshop introduces educators to key strategies for leveraging generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications in their teaching and assessment. Through this workshop, current research and a set of practical strategies on AI in teaching and assessment will be shared with clear directions for teachers’ continued learning. 

 

Designing High Quality Assessments with AI in Mind

 

  • ChatGPT, and other artificial intelligence (AI) applications, have revolutionized teaching, learning and assessment. This intensive workshop will prepare teachers to engage AI applications in the design of meaningful student assessments, to lead the way with transformative practice. Specifically, in this workshop, teachers will unpack the foundations of effective assessment practice and explore the challenges and benefits AI offers assessment in the classroom. Educators will learn how to design summative and formative assessments with AI in mind and leverage AI to enhance and measure student learning.

 

Developing Teacher Assessment Literacy: New Directions for Teacher Professional Development

 

  • This workshop focuses on supporting teachers’ assessment literacy by describing (a) current conceptions of assessment literacy, (b) teachers’ common approaches to assessment, and (c) a proven model for enhancing teacher assessment literacy.

 

Designing High Quality Performance and Collaborative Student Assessments

 

  • This workshop focuses on developing high quality performance and collaborative assessments across classroom contexts. Emphasis is placed on developing valid and authentic performance tasks and on designing coupled rubrics to guide formative and summative assessment practices. Participants will be encouraged to actively participate in designing a performance task for their teaching context.

 

 

Assessing 21st Century Global Competencies: Integrated STEAM Education and Assessment

 

  • This workshop supports educators in teaching 21st century global competencies through an integrated STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education approach. This workshop specifically focusses on the role of assessment as a catalyst for global competency learning, showing teachers how to leverage self- and peer-assessment processes as well as other formative and summative assessments to support creativity and innovation, critical thinking/problem solving skills, communication skills, collaboration skills, citizenship skills and social responsibility, and metacognition. Participants will actively participate in this hands-on workshop by designing a STEAM task linked to global competencies for their own teaching context.

 

Assessment in Play-based Teaching Contexts: Supporting our Early Learners

 

  • This workshop introduces educators to various models of play-based pedagogy with coupled assessment strategies. The workshop considers the value of play as a valuable pedagogy for teaching both academic as well as social and emotional skills to early learners, with consideration for how assessment supports this learning. The workshop will include diverse practical examples to demonstrate the application of theory to practice.

 

 

Enhancing Student Learning through Assessment for and as Learning: Focussing on Peer- and Self-assessment

 

  • This workshop focuses on embedding peer- and self-assessment practices into classrooms to enhance students’ learning. The workshop will describe the benefits of these assessment practices as well as strategies to overcome common challenges to peer- and self-assessment. A discussion of feedback, including various type and approaches to feedback, will support this workshop.
